Porsche to decide on fourth line by September
Reuters
German luxury car maker Porsche will make an announcement on a fourth model line shortly before the Frankfurt car show at the start of September, a company source told Reuters.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung reported on Sunday that Porsche Chief Executive Wendelin Wiedeking could announce the launch of the fourth line tomorrow, when German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is due to visit the company.
A spokesman for Porsche told Reuters, however, that that would definitely not be the case.
He also dismissed comments in the report that Porsche's works council and Wiedeking could sign an agreement at the start of the week guaranteeing the future of its operations in Germany.
"We are ultimately still in talks and both sides have agreed not to comment until they are concluded," he said.
The management wants more more efficient working hours and shorter breaks, while staff are seeking job guarantees at German locations until 2009.
Porsche has been mulling whether to introduce a fourth model line in addition to the Boxter roadster, Cayenne and 911 premium sports car for a while. Porsche has said a decision on a fourth model line would be taken in the summer.

Porsche plans new sports car
UPI - Monday, July 04, 2005

STUTTGART, Germany, July 4 (UPI) -- Germany's automobile giant Porsche is working on a brand-new sports car line.
The German news magazine "Der Spiegel" reported that plans for a new sports coupe are well under way. The car will be called "Panamera," and would cost between 70,000 and 100,000 euros ($83,699 to $119,570).
So far the company with its main assembly factory in Zuffenhausen near Stuttgart is producing only three different models -- the Autobahn-racer "911," the convertible "Boxster," and the SUV "Cayenne."
The Panamera looks similar to the 911, but is bigger and more family-friendly with its four doors, the company said. Its development has cost the company a staggering one billion euros, Der Spiegel reported.
In order to reduce production costs and keep its edge as the world's most profitable car company, Porsche plans to keep many of the production elements for a fourth car model in-house: The Panamera will make use of parts and technology already implemented in its Cayenne and 911 models.
Speculations about a fourth Porsche model have been surfacing for years. Experts believe the production of the Panamera could be officially announced as early as late July.

July 2005
Porsche is expected to decide on a fourth model line (in addition to the Boxster, 911 and Cayenne) by the end of July when a supervisory board meeting is scheduled, the Dow Jones Newswires reported.
It is expected that this will be a four-seater sports sedan named Panamera and will enter production in 2008 in Leipzig, East Germany, the DJN said, citing media reports. Porsche plans to do most of the production on its own, but outsource the making of the car's body to a supplier such as Austrian Magna Steyr or German Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, reports say.
The new model is expected to compete against such sedans as the Maserati Quattroporte or Mercedes CLS and analysts predict annual unit sales to be around at least 10,000.

Ahead of a formal announcement expected at this year’s Frankfurt motor show, information about Porsche’s Panamera four-door coupe is beginning to trickle from Stuttgart like dropped TCP/IP packets from the Höchstleistungsrechenzentrum. (Yes, Hans, we do German supercomputer humor.) Edmunds Inside Line reports on a Der Spiegel article indicating Porsche’s new model will share a platform with the Cayenne. The body will be built by auto production outsourcer, MagnaSteyr of Austria, and the final product will be assembled alongside the Cayenne at Porsche’s Leipzig, Germany, plant.
It’ll be powered by Cayenne’s 4.5-liter V8 (turbo edition too), though an ultra-performance model will get a detuned version of the Carrera GT’s 5.7-liter V10. Word is, Porsche is pushing the Panamera’s production date up to late-2007, from 2009 as it had originally indicated, and a concept will debut in Frankfurt later this year.
